Solving The Problem

For me personally, this has been one of the best exercises I have ever completed. And I am just getting started.

I have over 20 years of experience as a life and health agent. I work with seniors and those in need of health coverage almost daily. I see how important it is for people to have access to affordable healthcare that is effective. It is a real need. The community health center that I have been privileged to work with serves over 70,000 people yearly. It has approximately 13 offices in three Central Florida counties. The center accepts many insurance plans and offers a sliding scale program for those who do not have insurance. Literally anyone can see a doctor no matter how much money they have or don’t have.

For the past several years, I have collected information about the healthcare system and tried to better understand how it works. While I have mostly concentrated on customer acquisition over the years, I did not focus on marketing which would give me a greater understanding of the needs of my customers. While I still have a tremendous amount of learning to do, I think that I am ready to help those in my community and I am forming an LLC to inform the general public about healthcare options that are available. I can help people get the coverage or assistance they need.

I represent many major insurance carriers and alternative coverage providers as an agent and the marketing company will generate leads for my services. Within a year, I intend to form an insurance agency that will contract with insurance companies and I will not operate as a sole proprietor. This is my first step in a long-term plan to effect change in the healthcare delivery system. I don't think I'm going to change the system alone, but I believe that I can be a catalyst for change working with providers, care givers, governmental agencies and corporations.

One of the main reasons that I am finishing my BS degree is that I want to practice law in the healthcare sector. In about 2 ½ years, I’ll be in law school. With a law degree, I will be able to understand from the inside-out how our system works. So, I fully intend to take the knowledge I am learning here at UF and put it to good use.
